In net.flame, I agree with Rich Rosen; in net.religion we are on opposite sides. I agree that one should never get caught up in symbols. Even when I was in high school (maybe earlier; I'm not sure at this distance of years) I vehemently disagreed with the wording of the Pledge of Allegiance: I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for witches' dance.... (Seriously, my mother tells me I said that when I was very small.) But anyway, my point is: If you say you're pledging allegiance to the republic, why in the world should you pledge allegiance to an inanimate piece of cloth that happens to be its symbol?
