Wheeler referring to Genji as "the Genji person." Some people did not understand the context of my message. Here is an excerpt of a message from T. C. Wheeler. In this excerpt, he uses the phrase "the Genji person" in a demeaning way. He blows Genji into a more global symbol, that of those people who are not born in this country, are not grateful to this country and thus should go back to whereever they came from. This is precisely what my previous argument about symbols and their ill effects attempts to state. Mr Wheeler has evoked a symbol, a sterotype, to replace the real person (Genji), whose views are, I am sure, significantly more complex than the symbol that Mr. Wheeler projects on to him. Certainly it should be obvious that this is harmful to an open discussion and, even more importantly, an open society. Is this true, or am I being overly sensitive in this matter? /***** uiuccsb:net.flame / pyuxa!wetcw / 7:38 am Dec 8, 1983 */ helping with the unemployment problem. If the Genji person is only hanging around for the "money", then the Genji person should keep their mouth shut and let the rest of us get on with the job of making this country a better place to live for everyone.
