Lines: 59 As the Oregon winter sets in, and wind and rain scour the building... A few years back, Oregon governor Vic Atiyeh (sometimes yclept Atiyeh the Hun) was visiting his neighbor to the south, California governor Jerry Brown. Atiyeh happened to notice on Jerry's desk a pure white phone, set in a place of honor. Being a curious fellow, Vic asks, "What's that phone for, Jerry?" "Well, Vic, that's my hotline to the Lord." "Oh really," says our hero, sceptically. "Do you mind if I try it?" "Go right ahead" So Atiyeh picks up the phone, and, sure enough, it's connected directly to the Lord. Vic stammers a bit, then he asks a few questions, gets his answers, and hangs up after about four minutes, visibly shaken. "That was some experience," says Vic. "Do I owe you anything on the call, Jerry?" "Well, yes. That's $3,000.00" Atiyeh thinks that this is a little steep, but writes out a check anyway. After all, how often does one get to talk directly to the Lord? A few months later, Jerry goes up north to visit Vic. On his desk, in a place of honor, Jerry sees a pure white phone. "Is that what I think it is?" asks Jerry. "Yes," answers Vic. "After my experience visiting you, I decided to have my own hotline installed. Go ahead and try it." So Jerry picks up the phone and beginsd to talk to the Lord. He has a whole list of questions, and they tell a few jokes, and by the time Jerry hangs up, a half an hour has passed. At this point Jerry turns to Vic with a sheepish expression, and asks, "How much do I owe you?" Vic calculates a little on his desk pad and answers, "$2.35." "$2.35?! How come it's thousands of dollars in California and only $2.35 up here?" "That's simple, Jerry." says Atiyeh, "From Oregon, it's a local call."
