Foreign languge entries Message-ID: <819@ihuxr.UUCP> Date: Wed, 21-Dec-83 14:45:05 EST Article-I.D.: ihuxr.819 Posted: Wed Dec 21 14:45:05 1983 Date-Received: Sat, 24-Dec-83 11:22:21 EST References: <479@seismo.UUCP> <818@ihuxr.UUCP> <673@ut-sally.UUCP> Organization: AT&T Bell Labs, Naperville, IL Lines: 29 Since I posted the original flame, perhaps I should respond to the flame on my flame...... Why did I flame about non-english entries? Because it is reasonable to expect that the U.S. and Canada sites (The vast majority of the net) are primarily made up of english speakers. Additionally, english is the de facto language of the net, and as a result I feel that a posting in a language other than english is as rude as addressing an english language conference in a language other than english. While english is not the only language understood by net.readers, it is the common language, just as it is the major trade language of the western world. Chinese is (worldwide) a more common language, spoken by more people than any other - so maybe we should try to get all postings translated to Chinese. OF COURSE NOT! I also did not request that items not be posted in the native language, merely that when they are, a translation to the common net language accompany them.
