A complete article on the construction (hardware) and software for a
simple bar code reader was given in the Motorola 6800 (NOT 68K)
applications handbook about 6 years (is it really that long) ago.
Rummage around your hardware lab and see if they have an old copy.  In
particular, it explains in great detail the UPC symbols on supermarket
items.
