Unix was around for a long time before CP/M or MS-DOS.
It just took a long time before this rather complex
piece of software replaced the trivial operating systems
which preceded it on small computers.  I don't see any
other more capable O.S.'s waiting in the wings, unless
you think someone is going to port Multics to a 8088.
