IBM's special version of Unix - code-named Locust - will have the following features: 1. A Unix superset, providing upward, but not downward compatibliity; 2. Local-area networking (LAN) capability and support for Arpanet, X.25, and SNA/SDLC; 3. Interactive, multi-tasking, multi-user features; 4. R-Star relational database and SQL, QBE and OBE (office-by-example) support; 5. Compatible versions of Locust for larger mainframes - 43XX, 303X, and 308X series; 6. C-language portability for only IBM systems, PCs and future products; and 7. Many application development tools, generators, etc. Locust will give its users the ability to pull together, at run-time, dispersed system resources- processors, storage, file servers, printers - on an ad hoc basis, as needed, to run an application or solve an engineering/scientific problem. (Note: All of the above functional capabilities may not be introduced at once.)" The article suggests that Locust may be introduced by year-end.
