Any ideas? It has nothing whatsoever to do with cleanliness. The mistake in the original quote was in including the word "clean". Kosher means "permissible for consumption under the terms of the Jewish religion", *not* clean. The basis for the laws is not cleanliness, but observance of divine commandments.
