Fairly harmless?  I have seen TV reports of a shop owner standing on top of
his counter with a baseball bat trying to control the crowds.  I have also
heard from friends who've been silly enough to try and get them that the 
people push and shove like crazy, making even rush hours on the subways here
look tame!  People have been pushed -through- display case glass in the 
crunch.   Ugh!
