This of course being due to the large amount of classical music that isn't well known, especially compared to rock'n'pop music. Myself? well now... rather than dealing with favorites qua favorites, I'll suggest "Carmina Burana". This is a set of 12th century monkish manuscripts discovered in the 1800s and set to music by Carl Orff. The result is a bunch of short sort-of-choral pieces of different tones and subjects. The recording I have is DG 139362; (sorry, DG = Deutsche Grammophon), by the "Chor und orchester der deutschen oper berlin", conducted by Eugen Fochum. Mark Mallett decvax!sii!mem
