As an alumnus of the Indiana University School of Music (yes, that's in
Bloomington, Indiana where "Breaking Away" takes place), I consider
myself well-suited to answer the question regarding the music in Breaking
Away!!

The theme tune is the Overture to "The Barber of Seville" by Giaccomo
(I hope I spelled that right) Rossini.
