If you are afraid of the cat pulling down the tree you can use a different style of tree stand. Instead of using a metal tri-legged stand that can tip over and offers exsposed water to the cat, I use a large plastic bucket filled with sand. This has two advantages: 1. The cat can't tip it over. After the bucket was filled, I could hardly move it. 2. The bucket full of sand and water needs less refilling and keeps the tree looking good for a very, very long time. My cats actually thought the tree was the great cat-killer from Mars and stayed well away from it. Except the year I didn't have any sand and used Kitty-litter instead. Don't make that mistake.
