There is a movement of know-nothingism about today that endangers all free-thinking people. I think that well reasoned and thoughtful messages such as the one by Byron Howes helps us "fight" the "dark side" of the force with reason. Another reason for continuing is that the discussion makes us think about the foundations of our paradigm. I agree that there is far too much narrowness in people's thinking and that this is a problem. Yet I do not see this as a reason to make only one network news group so that people will have to wade through all sorts of other things to find what they are looking for in hopes that they will become enlightened by the other discussions. I signed up for this list to discuss physics. The creationism discussion seems to have digressed from this point. Therefore, it should move from this list. You cannot force people to start thinking if it is not their choice. Certainly, sending messages which do not pertain to the list and serve only to anger its participants do not cause said participants to think. Scott Alexander salex@rice
