Before the start of the game both national anthems were played . The soviet anthem was sung by a male singer with a rather heavy accent (in russian) , possibly ukrainian or polish . The text , as sung , was a version never heard in the soviet union . All references to the communist party , communism or socialism (of which the real soviet anthem is chock full) were conspicuously absent . They were replaced by some semi-nonsensical set of russian words (something about "bright victory").... As the soviet anthem was being played , the camera showed closeups of the faces of the soviet players . They appeared somewhat confused . I (think) , I may have seen a smile or two .... And so it goes..... B.Reytblat ...!pyuxvv!brt p.s. at the first intermission : USA 0 : USSR 1 p.p.s. to: Piet Baartem(?sp). Sir , you are blind .
