The book is Fevre Dream, by George R.R. Martin.  GRRM was responsible for
The Dying of the Light, which I thought was a turkey.

This is both a vampire story and a Mississippi steamboat story.  How can
he go wrong?  Good atmospherics, entertaining story, even some Characters.
Well above average.

But on the other hand, haven't read anything GOOD and NEW (in other words,
by Disch or Wolfe) in over a year now, so I may be a bit uncritical...
