I want to add an addenda to Rob's Law of Social Intercourse:

*ALWAYS BRING ENOUGH MONEY FOR THE OTHER PERSON*. I remember a dinner
I had about 9 months ago with a rather wonderful person who forgot to
bring any money to the restaurant. Me, being a rather wonderful forgetful
person *also* forgot to bring any money. The meal had just
been ordered when we discovered this. So I excused myself and ran
laughing through the streets to a nearby bank machine where I got 
the money. It was all extremely funny (though I shudder to think
that there was a time before bank machines) but I think that the
whole romantic atmosphere was rather shot. And now I know why my
mother said "always bring enough money to pay for him too, dear..."
