I have been asked (directly or indirectly) before. And it made me feel good
and wanted. In one particular case, I was sent a note showing interest. When
I met the girl, my main concern was to ensure that she does not feel that
she has broken some protocol. 

Now, in fact I almost insist after a while, that the girl call me. It makes
me feel that the friendship is two way. I also prefer to treat anyone on a
equal basis, and not act extra chivalorous. Some people do not like this,
but I beleive that by being extra "nice" to a girl, you are supporting the
old views about protocols and not treating females as your equal.
