(instead of being asked, "Why don't we go out on a date?") Question for women: Why do women sometimes phrase the question that way? I can only assume that the woman is having a hard enough time taking the initiative in this situation (going against the grain, as it were), and she can pass the buck by phrasing the question upside-down. Another example is the following dialogue: Woman: "Ask me out on a date." Man: "Would you like to go out on a date?" Woman: "Sure!"
