The Big Island Ultraman Triathalon will be held in Kailua-Kona,
Hawaii, starting on Thursday, December 29.

The elite field of 40 invitation-only athletes features San Diego's
Kurt Madden, Kailua-Kona's Ken 'Cowman' Shirk, and 61-year-old Bill
Bell of Redondo Beach, Calif.

The 6-mile roughwater swim starts at 7 am.  The 235-mile bike race
starts at 6 am the next day, and the double marathon (52.4 miles)
begins at 6 am on Saturday.  Unlike the 'Ironman' and similar
triathalons, the events do not immediately follow one another, but are
scheduled for separate days.  This is, according to the organizers, in
order to avoid killing any of the participants.
