    Is it
    standard practice to (in the middle of a battle) to bring out the
    dead onto the bridge rather than using the intercom to announce
    such tragedies? (this in Wrath of Khan)

It is if the ensign is your nephew (read the book, which contains much
that was left on the cutting room floor).
