Industry sources reported that IBM will make a major announcement defining its strategy for providing UNIX for its mainframe processors, and possibly for its PCs. The announcement may come by mid-December. Some sources see the strategy declaration as forestalling possible competitive pressure from AT&T after Jan 1; others view it as answering customers' clamor for UNIX applications. Several leading software firms are pursuing UNIX development contracts with IBM.
