Thanks much for all the good advice and pointers I received in
response to my inquiry.  My main problem was in not knowing where
to look for the info; I was thinking "printer problem", so
looked in indices and entries relating to "printer", and NOT to
"tty" where the real answers were to be found.  Now that I know
how init and getty relate to this issue, the situation becomes
clear.
