It is called "hpgl" and basically describes a very dumb terminal. Plot(1) now recognizes hpgl from the TERM environment variable and invokes the hpgl(1) filter. To make a plot, one must sign on to the terminal associated with the plotter (currently in the machine room) and simply pipe any graphical output to plot.
