I've thought about this myself.  People have had the option to buy phones
for some time now and I've always suggested renting one and purchasing all
others.  This way, the Phone Company is always responsible.  Unfortunately,
this means having at least two phones in the house.  For those who have one,
and need only one, I think renting is the best way.
