I think a better way to get rid of tailgaters is too continue to slow
down until they pass.  I got down to 20 mph once before the SOB decided
that he'd had enough and passed.

Using the brakes abruptly invites a rear end collision.  If you lose your
life it matters naught that you were in the right.
