Gradually slowing down when you are being tailgated is not a trick; it is the correct driving procedure. The safest thing to do is to get down to a speed such that the distance between your car and the 'gaters is safe (e.g., 10 mph at 10 feet). Usually you will be passed before you get that slow. If you are nervy, but (I sincerely hope) not nervy enough to hit your brakes, which sounds like a crazy idea to me, you might try this, which I have found very effective -- manipulate your turn signal so that your rear lights blink alternately left and right several times. The tailgater will then know that you are an idiot who cannot be trusted, and he will probably drop back a few car lengths. - Toby Robison decvax!ittvax!eosp1!robison or: allegra!eosp1!robison (maybe: princeton!eosp1!robison)
