When I mentioned that the technique was a QUICK stab, I did not imply that your foot should remain on the pedal. Rather, It should be done in such a manner as to affect the motion of the car, but not enough to invite a rear-end collision. This takes a bit of finesse, and should not be tried unless you're SURE there's enough room. If the guy is right smack on your bumper, you're better off taking evasive action. If he's riding your butt in the passing lane on the freeway, get over as soon as you can. In any case, if you want to try the fast-brake tactic, it should always be immediately followed by a spurt of acceleration. The idea is to unnerve the jerk, not invite him into your back seat.
