When Steve Allen did the show, it was called "TONIGHT!".  (The exclamation
point was part of the title).

When Jack Paar did the show, it was called "TONIGHT".  (Paar was a little
more low-key).

For a time in the sixties, the program was officially called "The Johnny
Carson Show," although Carson himself modestly referred to the program
as "The Tonight Show".

Eventually, the network decided to make "The Tonight Show" the official title.
