This sounds like a terribly boring topic, so I haven't been following
it much.  However, I've seen several people suggest that you "tap on
your brake pedal" and hit the gas at the same time.  Sounds terribly
complicated, and tends to promote the amateurish two-foot driving habit.

A better solution during day-time hours is simply to turn on your
headlights when a person hugs your tail.  Virtually nobody can distinguish
tail-lights from brake-lights.  The effect can be quite dramatic.
