I took the (canine often used for racing in uncivilized parts of the U.S.) because it was the only transportation available. By auto, the Toledo to Columbus trip is about 2 1/2 hours, if you drive at a pace inoffensive to the state's notorious highway patrol, but the bus ride took a bit over 5 hours. Seems that it has to stop in every dinkle- little town in Ohio, to variously pick up and drop off a wide assortment of passengers. These include tobacco-chawing country types who've never used indoor plumbing, assorted winos and bums, complete with muscatel-bearing paper bags, various denizens of small-town life who seem to come from a culture where bathing is considered a semi-weekly custom. I can certainly say that was the worst trip I've ever taken in my life! I'd have been much better off thumbing my way, something I did often when I was a lot younger. I can't imagine what it must be like to take the bus cross-country, but it must be something like jail, or maybe, premature burial. I sure hope Amtrak can survive. Bob Fishell
