The use of "they" in various forms has been used as a non-sex-specific singular
third person pronoun for a while, so its use does not imply ignorance of
grammar.  I'm not saying it's right or wrong (I use it, I don't care if anybody
doesn't like it, and grammar *does* change over time whether one likes it or
not).
