I am informed by a usually reliable source (who has lived in both hemispheres) that the product sold as Marmite in the antipodes is NOT the same as that produced in Britain and sold there and here. It is a distorted variant for those poor Australians who could not handle the real Marmite. This explains any disparaging comparisons of Marmite against Vegemite. It is not the real stuff. (I do not speak from personal experience. I took his word for it and did not try antipodean Marmite. But I did try antipodean Special K, and found that it was much more like corn flakes than like real Special K. Honest. So I am inclined to believe that this is the truth.)
