However, there is no such thing as a "free" society: society always infringes on the freedom of the individual to protect him/others from his stupidity. Aside from this, there is a good *MONETARY* reason for seatbelt/helmet laws. When you get your head bashed in, it costs *MONEY* to have it fixed. In Canada, with socialized medicine, that means literally millions of dollars a year spent on operations that may have been prevented or at least lessened in seriousness.
