Try "Alas, Babylon" by Pat Frank.  The story deals with the survivors of
a nuclear war that live in central Florida.  I think the first time I
read it was my Freshman-Sophmore year in high school, so it should be the
right level.  Also try "Hiroshima" by John Hershey.
