The original shaggy dog story is a long long yarn about the woman who advertises that her dog is lost (it's a VERY shaggy dog) and that she will pay $50,000 to the person who can recover it. The protagonist goes on a trail after the dog, keeps missing it ("Oh, that really shaggy dog? I just saw that taxi take off wit it!" etc. etc.), follows it halfway around the world, finally gets it and brings it back to the woman, only to be told, "Oh, no, it's not THAT shaggy!" A shaggy dog story is not a story which requires a pun at the end, like the Fractured Fairy Tales and others of that genre. The punchline is so bad, it simply was not worth waiting for. That's the fun of them. I have a few more shaggy dog stories if anyone's interested. Dave Sherman Toronto -- {allegra,cornell,decvax,ihnp4,linus,utzoo}!utcsrgv!dave
