Jefferson tosses a piece of paper down from his apartment to John Adams and Benjamin Franklin, who are waiting in the street. Adams reads it aloud. The gist of Jefferson's note is: "I am taking my wife to bed." Adams pauses, then asks in a shocked voice, "In the middle of the afternoon???" Franklin replies, "Not everyone's from Boston, John...."
