Of all the gifts my 1 1/2 year old nephew received, the ones he plays
with most are:

An empty 2-litre plastic bottle
pots and pans
teak coasters and a plastic container to put them in and out of
large poker chips (for the noise)
THEN
toddler's first blocks (93 in all)
the hammer from a 'hammer the pegs through the holes' thing (he likes
  to chew on it)
'popcorn popper' roll toy

He actually tends to play with one thing only a few minutes at a time,
other than the first 3 items.
