We have been told that come tuesday we will have the code for our 4.2bsd systems to talk back to the Iris. The code is for XNS but does not go in as 'another' protocol to the protocol switch (ie where TCP goes), it will go in into teh kernel and look like a terminal driver and you will talk to it as if the workstation is directly connected to the vax. Now that is fine if you have a device that is basicly a terminal, but other companys are also writing protocol code for 4.2bsd in the same manner (Symbolics and there chaos-net code). Has anyone else done work on getting a another protocol into 4.2bsd? martin levy, bell lab.
