T. Cohen, "Data Abstraction, Data Encapsulation and Object-Oriented Programming," in SIGPLAN Notices 19:1 (Jan 1984), pp. 31-35. The author attempts "to draw a clear-cut and useful distinction among them [the three terms of the title] and to show that they describe complementary aspects of the general idea of information-hiding." I found the article to be well-written and quite helpful in untangling the terms and the ideas they represent. -- Scott Stevens AT&T Consumer Products Laboratories Indianapolis, Indiana, USA UUCP: inuxh!stevens
