Barbituates are used to reduce brain metabolism in anoxia
victims.  The theory, based on animal studies, is that brain
cells are much less likely to die when their metabolism is
artificially maintained at a much reduced level following a
severe anoxic insult.

Naturally, coma appears as a side effect of the reduced brain
metabolism caused by the barbituates.
