This reminds me that I am often completely amazed at the inability
of a large segment of the public to detect satire, parody, irony or
other forms of "just kidding" in written language.  In this case, I just
wonder, but sometimes when a satirical writer is using the device on a
"serious" subject, say in the daily newspaper, the resulting cries of outrage
from people who took that writer at face value sadden me.  I don't know what
should be done about it except maybe to prescribe large doses of
Jonathon Swift as therapy.
