I had two cats with my waterbed for 6 months (then I had them declawed).
One was frightened of the movement and stayed off.  The other loved to 
walk around on it and also to jump off the windowsill onto it.  I never
had any marks from this - I think the mattress pad helped.  But as an
extra precaution I tried to remember to pull the comforter over the whole
bed.  The instructions that came with the bed warned against cats but claimed
that dogs were okay unless they tried to chew on it.
