One exception to this (at least it was, last year):  I signed into a Motel 6
and presented my VISA.  I was informed that they did not take credit cards.
Fortunately, they also don't take a huge chunk of cash for a night.

However, the proprietor indicated vaguely that Motel 6 was going to start
taking credit cards after the first of the year; so they may eventually alter
their treatment of cash customers.  *Sigh*...
