If so, perhaps Anakin/Darth constructed another, more powerful saber some time after being seduced by the dark side. The abandoned saber could have fallen into Ben's hands and, to perpetuate the "point of view" of Luke's father's death, he presented it to Luke on Tatooine. If you really want to be picky, you could say that Ben's thoughtful attitude when telling Luke about his father for the first time is actually hesitation and the act of fabricating the "point of view" (I hate to say that a Jedi can lie).
