So do Sam Ash & Manny's on 48th. There are lots of other stores on 48th st, too, many with unique and interesting items.... such as the one right across from the above two, a hugh storefront that sells & repairs used instruments, including many vintage instruments. Also in Manhattan, there's Matt Umanov's (sp?) in the Village, and Eddie Bell's in the 20's does good repair work. One of the best places in the world for vintage steel-string acoustics, banjos, mandolins, dobros, etc., is Mandolin Brothers in Staten Island. Finally, at any of these places you can have your purchase shipped out of state, and thus avoid the sales tax; however, the shipping cost will probably come to as much as the tax you save. {philabs,cmcl2!rocky2}!cubsvax!peters (Peter S Shenkin; Dept of Biol Sci; Columbia Univ; NY, NY 10027; 212-280-5517)
