In earlier centuries other suggestions would have been: refined cultivated considerate The whole notion of a gentleman has always been inherently related to class and ecomnomic status. A clear indication of this is "chivalrous" stemming as it does from the Roman identification of the "gens" with the equestrian class. A good non-latinate, Anglo-Saxon synonym for gentlemanly is "couth". Its etymology clearly indicates 'knowing' behaviour. "A gentleman is one who is never rude unintentionally" Noel Coward "couth" is also a 'missing positive'. Would anyone care to supply oth- ers?
