I have a speaking relationship with many people who are not working within my own department. You might try sitting next to or with the person at lunch and starting a conversation then. If you are willing to be patient, then begin by saying hello when you see them in the hall. Find some area of contact; the copier, the coffee machine, someplace where you may see them and talk beyond just saying hello. It seems old hat, but giving someone a compliment (meant, of course) is a good way of establish contact that is in your favor. (That person noticed that I just bought a new bicycle, how nice) Egoboo works and is needed by everyone. After a number of casual meetings, you might suggest that you get to know each other better by having lunch together. I suggest lunch for a first meeting outside of work as the initial commitment necessary from both sides is less when you must return to work in an hour. Hope this helps you out.
