Since pain is something we do not want, we would not (consciously or otherwise) cause it by self pity. The whole article is out of line with reality and suggests that the author has never had a broken heart. (no self pity, then?) A broken heart feels awful because the person experiences tremendous traumatic stress due to emotional (and physical) dependency on his/her MOTAS with whom they split up.
