Yes, but Scotty was a REGULAR, so he couldn't have died.  

Also, in (I believe) THE DEADLY YEARS, where all the officers started aging
fast, some women in the landing party died, and she was wearing a BLUE 
shirt.

Maybe Rodenberry was anti-communist and was trying to make the statement
"Better dead than red" (:>)
