For testing ethernet interfaces (the reason you claimed for your mod), I think it would be more conclusive to run Mike Muess's ICMP echo sender and bounce packets off of another host. If this test fails it's time to swap the xcvr/board or run a more exhaustive diagnostic. Using your test method (machine talking to itself on the ether) would still be an intermediate step before running the ICMP test, since I can imagine certain ether failure modes (weak transmitter) that would pass your test but fail the ICMP echo.
